Dans le cadre de l'Année Polaire Internationale (IPY), BONUS- GOODHOPE a pour objectif général d'aider à la compréhension des interactions entre la dynamique océanique, l'atmosphère, la biogéochimie et la géochimie de l'Océan Austral dans le secteur Atlantique, en particulier au niveau de ses zones d'échanges Indo-Atlantiques et de celles avec la marge continentale Sud-Africaine. Ce projet se situe dans le cadre de l'évaluation du rôle de cette région océanique sur le climat global et ses variations (futures et passées). Ce projet multidisciplinaire réunira des physiciens, des bio- et -géochimistes et des modélisateurs : par le couplage
i) de la dynamique océanique
ii) avec la biogéochimie dans la colonne d'eau, l'atmosphère et le sédiment,
iii) avec l'étude des éléments trace et des isotopes qui servent de traceurs de sources lithogéniques, de circulation et de ventilation des masses d'eau, et de processus biogéochimiques, et qui permettent également de quantifier les flux particulaires exportés de la surface vers les eaux profondes, et
iv) avec le développement de modèles qui regroupent des configurations à grande échelle et à échelle régionale, des modèles idéalisés, des modèles biogéochimiques, et des simulations des éléments trace et des isotopes ;
le projet fournira des avancées significatives dans les processus physiques, chimiques et biologiques mis en jeu à l'échelle de l'Océan Austral et à l'échelle climatique.
Le projet BONUS-GOODHOPE a été approuvé par le International Scientific Committee ICSU/WMO de l'API (EoI#584) , et apparaît également sous trois activités clé de l'API (GEOTRACES ID#269, ICED ID#417, CASO ID#132). BONUS-GOODHOPE aura des interactions fortes avec le projet IPY ZERO&DRAKE (EoI#880) qui a planifié une étude de type GEOTRACES et CASO le long du Méridien 0°E dans l'Atlantique Austral, et dans le passage de Drake à bord du bateau allemand RV Polarstern (mission ANT-XXIV/3, Chief scientist: E. Fahrbach ) durant l'été austral 2008 (6 Février-17 Avril). Cette interaction permettra l'étude d'une section complète entre le continent Antarctique et l'Afrique du Sud. De plus une coordination avec un projet NSF de mesures des tourbillons profonds de NADW (L. Beal, RSMAS, USA) renforcera et étendra les études en océanographie physique qui sont prévues dans BONUS-GOODHOPE .
Les objectifs de BONUS-GOODHOPE s'inscrivent dans le cadre de ceux de trois programmes internationaux GEOTRACES (SCOR), IMBER (IGBP/SCOR) et CLIVAR/CliC/SCAR-Southern Ocean .
Le projet fédère des équipes françaises et implique une forte collaboration internationale. Ce projet sur six ans (2007-2012) est basé sur deux campagnes océanographiques :
a) une à grande échelle ( LEG1 ) depuis Cape Town en Afrique du sud jusqu'au sud de la frontière sud du Courant Antarctique Circumpolaire dans l'Océan Austral en été austral 2008 (7 Février au 24 Mars 2008) à bord du Marion Dufresne ;
b) une à méso-échelle ( LEG2 ) sur le banc des Aiguilles l'année suivante (Janvier-Février 2010) à bord du Pourquoi Pas ?.
Le LEG1 est financé par LEFE-actions CYBER et IDAO pour une durée de 5 ans (2007-2011), par l'ANR-programme Blanc (ANR-07-BLAN-0146-02) pour une durée de 36 mois (2007-2009). Il reçoit également les soutiens financiers de l'IPEV, l'IFREMER, l'IRD ; et le soutient instrumental de l'INSU.
Par ailleurs les nombreuses collaborations scientifiques internationales impliquées dans le LEG1 sont soutenues financièrement par des contrats nationaux sud-africain, belge, américain, anglais, espagnol, allemand, brésilien, italien…
Le LEG2 sera re-soumis à l'AO-LEFE en fin 2008, sous le nouvel acronyme « SACSO » (South African Continental Slope - Ocean exchanges).

In the framework of the International Polar Year (IPY), BONUS-GOODHOPE aims to understand the interactions between the contemporary dynamic, circulation, biogeochemistry and geochemistry in the Southern Ocean in its atlantic sector and its exchanges with the Indo-Atlantic connection on the wake of the south-Africa continental margin in the Agulhas system.
Oceanographic physicians, bio- and geo-chemisters, and modellers will closely collaborate in this multidisciplinary project. Thus coupling
i) the oceanic dynamics,
ii) with the biogeochemistry in the water column, the atmosphere and the sediments,
iii) with the study of trace elements and isotopes that are tracers of terrigenous sources, of circulation and ventilation of the water-masses, of biogeochemical processes and that can serve to quantify the particulate export fluxes to deep waters, and
iv) with modelling that encompass configurations at large and regional scales, idealized and biogeochemical modelling, and simulations using trace elements and isotopes;
this project will provide significant advances in the physical, chemical and biological processes taken place in the Southern Ocean and at the climatic scale. This french initiative federates about 9 French laboratories (~58 people), as well as 9 European (~22 people) and 8 International (~21 people) Laboratories.
This project based on a 5 years research (2007-2011) relies on two oceanographic cruises, i) a large scale cruise (LEG1) from Capetown in South Africa to the southern frontier of the ACC (~57°S) in the Southern Ocean on board the French RV Marion Dufresne during the austral summer 2008 (Feb.-mid March), and ii) a meso-scale cruise (LEG2) within the Agulhas Bank ideally one year later (austral summer 2009).
BONUS-GOODHOPE has been endorsed by the International Scientific Committee ICSU/WMO of the IPY (EoI#584), and stands under three lead IPY-activities ( GEOTRACES ID#269, ICED ID#417, CASO ID#132). Its objectives are also relevant to International Programs GEOTRACES ( SCOR ), IMBER (IGBP/SCOR) and CLIVAR/CliC/SCAR-Southern Ocean .
It will have strong interactions with the IPY ZERO&DRAKE project (EoI#880, PI H. de Baar, NL) which plans an IPY-GEOTRACES & CASO study along the Greenwich meridian in the atlantic Austral and through the Drake passage on board the German RV POLARSTERN (ANT-XXIV/3 cruise, Chief scientist: E. Fahrbach) during the austral summer in 2008. This collaborative effort will provide a full section between South Africa and Antarctica. Moreover BONUS-GOODHOPE will also benefit of a strong collaboration with L. Beal (RSMAS, USA) who applied to NSF to study the deep eddies formation of the North Atlantic Deep Water in the wake and within the Agulhas system.
