Seawater concentrations of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) were determined following hydrolysis, purge, cryotrapping, and sulfur-specific gas chromatography processes described by Christaki et al., 1996 (Mar. Ecol. Prog. Ser., 141, 119-127). Total DMSP was determined by substracting DMS from DMS+DMSP determined in hydrolysed unfiltered samples.Reverse flow filtration was used to size fractionate particulate DMSP (pDMSP). The size fractions are pDMSP>10 µm and pDMSP<10 µm. Dissolved compounds (dDMSP and DMS) were measured in seawater filtered through Whatmann GF/F glass fiber filters. dDMSP was determined by substracting DMS from DMS+dDMSP determined in hydrolysed filtered samples.
