How oocytes are created and then mature to fertilizable eggs and how sperm trigger initiation of embryonic development at fertilization are interesting questions that have attracted scientists for over a century. These essential steps of the reproduction process are also an important issue for medical research. The aim of this meeting is to bring together researchers who work on a wide range of animals to clarify the mechanisms regulating oocyte maturation and fertilization. Keeping researchers up-to-date with recent developments in standard and non-standard model systems is of great importance, and demonstrating the advantages of respective systems will foster collaboration to understand the basic mechanisms at the beginning of animal life.
